Picture Frame Sizes and Styles: A Simple Guide

Picture Frame Sizes and Styles: A Simple Guide

The frame changes how a print reads as much as the print itself. Here is a plain guide to choosing one.

Common sizes and what they suit

  • Small (A5–8×10 in): shelves, desks and filling gaps in a gallery wall.
  • Medium (12×18 in): the everyday workhorse — big enough to stand alone, easy to group in sets.
  • Large (A2 and above): statement pieces above a sofa, bed or console.

Frame styles

  • Thin black: modern and quiet; lets the artwork lead. The safest choice for mixed sets.
  • Natural wood: warmer, softens graphic prints and suits neutral rooms.
  • Wide or ornate: formal, best for classic reproductions and single hangs.

Should you use a mount?

A mount (the card border inside the frame) gives the image breathing room and makes a small print feel more considered. Skip it when you want the artwork to fill the frame edge to edge.

Buying in sets

Matching frame packs are the easiest way to make a mixed group of prints look like a collection — same colour, same profile, different contents.
