How to Hang Wall Art at the Right Height

How to Hang Wall Art at the Right Height

Most art is hung too high. Getting the height right instantly makes a room feel more settled — and it takes one measurement.

The eye-level rule

Hang art so its centre sits roughly 145–150 cm from the floor. That is average eye level, and it is the standard galleries use. It applies whether the ceiling is high or low.

Hanging above furniture

  • Leave about 15–20 cm between the top of the sofa or headboard and the bottom of the frame.
  • The art should relate to the furniture, not float far above it.
  • Centre it on the furniture, not on the wall, if the two differ.

Multi-panel and grouped pieces

Treat a set as one single artwork: find the centre of the whole arrangement and place that at eye level. Keep panel gaps consistent — usually 3–5 cm for a three-panel canvas.

Fixings that hold

  • Check what the wall is made of before choosing a hook or anchor.
  • Use two fixings on wider pieces so they stay level over time.
  • Mark with a pencil and a spirit level; measure twice before drilling.

Right height, right fixings, and the piece looks like it belongs. Browse our wall art range to find your next piece.
