How to Build a Gallery Wall That Looks Considered
A gallery wall looks effortless when it is planned and messy when it is not. A little preparation is all it takes.
Plan it on the floor first
Lay the prints out on the floor and rearrange until the balance feels right. Photograph the layout so you can copy it onto the wall — this saves a wall full of nail holes.
Give it a spine
- A centre line: keep the middle row aligned and build outward.
- Even gaps: 5–8 cm between frames reads as deliberate; uneven gaps read as accidental.
- An anchor piece: start with the largest print slightly off-centre, then fill around it.
Unify with one thing
A grouping holds together when something repeats — the same frame colour, a shared palette, or a single subject running through the set. Mixed frames plus mixed subjects plus mixed sizes is usually one variable too many.
Hanging tips
- Cut paper templates the size of each frame and tape them up before drilling.
- Use a spirit level on the first frame; the rest follow from it.
- Leave the grouping a little tighter than feels natural — gaps grow visually once hung.
